Yeast infection medications
There’s a wide array of yeast infection medications available over the counter. They range from topical solutions and creams to oral prescriptions. Those who have fully recovered from yeast infection might recommend some useful home remedies and herbal treatment. Most of these treatment methods have antifungal properties that target the reduction of the Candida yeast.
Topical Medications
Topical medications are the first line of treatment that the doctor would recommend for yeast infection. Topical creams are introduced inside the vagina through an applicator that comes along with the product. They can also be applied directly to the vulva (the external genitalia). Vaginal suppositories are solid cylindrical or conical medications which are inserted into the vagina where it dissolves. Almost all of these topical medications can be purchased over the counter.
The most common generic topical medications used to treat yeast infection are nystatin (brand names Nystan, Nysert), miconazole (brand names: Monistat, Micatin) and clotrimazole (brand names: Mycelex, Lotrimin). Other generics include butoconazole (brand names: Femstat, Gynazole) and tioconazole (brand names: GyneCure, Vagistat).
These topical agents contain some type of oil that weakens the latex rubber that condoms and diaphragms are made of. It’s best to use another type of birth control method when using these medications.
Boric acid is also known to fight persistent yeast infection. Boric acid suppositories of 600 mg can be inserted into the vagina once a day for two weeks.
Oral Medications
When the yeast infection does not respond to topical preparations, the doctor might recommend that you start taking oral drugs. Oral medications are also prescribed to stop stubborn or recurring vaginal yeast infection.
On top of the list is fluconazole. This oral drug prevents local and systemic yeast infection by targeting the replication of the pathogenic fungi. The most popular brand of fluconazole is the Diflucan, which is said to cure yeast infection in a single dosage.
As a precaution, fluconazole should never be administered to pregnant or breastfeeding women because it can pose severe side effects on the fetus or infant. If you are planning to get pregnant, you might as well stay away from fluconazole.
Other generic names of orally-introduced yeast infection drugs include ketoconazole (Nizoral tablet) and itraconazole (Sporanox). These medications should be used with the necessary precautionary measures because they are known to bring heart and liver problems as their side effects.
